The span of correlations in dolphin whistle sequences

چکیده
Long-range correlations are found in symbolic sequences from human language, music and DNA. Determining the span of correlations in dolphin whistle sequences is crucial for shedding light on their communicative complexity. Dolphin whistles share various statistical properties with human words, i.e. Zipf’s law for word frequencies (namely that the probability of the ith most frequent word of a text is about i) and a parallel of the tendency of more frequent words to have more meanings. The finding of Zipf’s law for word frequencies in dolphin whistles has been the topic of an intense debate on its implications. One of the major arguments against the relevance of Zipf’s law in dolphin whistles is that is not possible to distinguish the outcome of a die rolling experiment from that of a linguistic or communicative source producing Zipf’s law for word frequencies. Here we show that statistically significant whistle-whistle correlations extend back to the 2nd previous whistle in the sequence using a global randomization test and to the 4th previous whistle using a local randomization test. None of these correlations are expected by a die rolling experiment and other simple explanation of Zipf’s law for word frequencies such as Simon’s model that produce sequences of unpredictable elements.

Differences in the whistle characteristics and repertoire of Bottlenose and Spinner Dolphins.
Several methods have been used to compare the whistles produced by dolphins. The two methods used in this study are: (1) a classification of whistle contours in six categories (i.e. constant frequency, upsweep, downsweep, concave, convex, and sine) and (2) the extraction of frequency and time parameters from each whistle contour. Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus whistles are described in t...
متن کاملAn Approach to Detect Dolphin Whistle from Underwater Sounds
This paper handles the issue of identifying the whistle of a dolphin in the presence of noise. When a recorded underwater signal containing other sounds is given to a system, it detects and identifies the presence of dolphin whistle. Analyzing the extracted underwater sounds gives meaningful information about the environment. Also, the presence of a particular underwater species and their behav...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dolphin Watching Boat Noise Levels on the Whistle Acoustic Structure of Dolphins in Bocas Del Toro, Panama
The resident bottlenose dolphin community at Dolphin Bay in Bocas del Toro sustains the largest dolphin watching (DW) industry in Panama. Our previous work shows that dolphins significantly respond to DW boat presence by modifying their whistle frequency and duration particularly when engaged in foraging activities. The usual assumption is that the noise associated with the DW boats is responsi...
متن کاملA Law of Word Meaning in Dolphin Whistle Types
We show that dolphin whistle types tend to be used in specific behavioral contexts, which is consistent with the hypothesis that dolphin whistle have some sort of “meaning”. Besides, in some cases, it can be shown that the behavioral context in which a whistle tends to occur or not occur is shared by different individuals, which is consistent with the hypothesis that dolphins are communicating ...
متن کاملIdentification and Characteristics of Signature Whistles in Wild Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from Namibia
A signature whistle type is a learned, individually distinctive whistle type in a dolphin's acoustic repertoire that broadcasts the identity of the whistle owner. The acquisition and use of signature whistles indicates complex cognitive functioning that requires wider investigation in wild dolphin populations. Here we identify signature whistle types from a population of approximately 100 wild ...
